After a year out, the Falcons returned to the playoffs with
a strong offense that covered for a weak defense. William Andrews and rookie
Gerald Riggs ran well behind a big offensive line, which featured all-pros
Mike Kenn, R.C. Thielemann and Jeff Van Note. The same blockers kept Steve
Bartkowski healthy and gave him time to pass over run-conscious defenses.
The Atlanta defense failed to mount a competent pass rush despite the return
to form of Joel Williams. The Falcons made their season winning four of
their first five games after the strike. With a playoff dare assured, they
then looked horrible in their final two matches, losing 38-7 to Green Bay
and 35-6 to New Orleans. The Falcons looked listless in the playoffs as
well, blowing a 21-13 lead to the Vikings in the first round, and losing
30-24. The special teams and the defense accounted for all of the Atlanta
touchdowns. |
